About Percussion Ringtones
Percussion tones work on a different principle from melodic ones. There is little or no melody to follow; the rhythm carries the whole tone. Drums produce sharp transients, and transients survive background noise far better than sustained notes, which is why a drum-led ringtone stays audible in places where a flute or piano tone disappears.
If you drive, work outdoors, work near machinery, or simply keep missing calls, this is the collection to try first. It will usually make more difference than turning the volume up, because volume does not help when the problem is that the frequencies are being masked.
The social cost is real, though. A drum tone in a quiet office is conspicuous, and it is the kind of ringtone people comment on. Many users keep a percussion tone as the default and switch to vibrate when they sit down indoors.

They are noticeable rather than loud. The reason they cut through noise is the sharpness of each hit, not the overall level, so lowering ring volume helps less than you would expect. In consistently quiet environments a relaxing or notification tone is a better fit.

Phone speakers reproduce almost nothing below about 400 Hz and are strongest in the mid range. Percussion has a great deal of mid and upper-mid energy in each hit, while orchestral pieces rely on low strings and brass that the speaker cannot reproduce at all.
